SUGAR MAGNOLIA

We decided to go back to Ventura to stay a week and see some friends we made along the way. We found a park within walking distance to downtown Ventura called Waypoint. It’s a really cool retro themed park. Waypoint has a number of old Airstreams and similar trailers which they refurbished and have available for humans to rent for a day or weekend. They have a couple of common areas with a firepit, chairs, and grills for people to use. I noticed that the park uses old propane tanks in the firepits. I looked and the cylinders are from 1942 and manufactured in Los Angeles. The cylinders have a gas outlet inside with holes cut in it so the fire would put off heat. The park office is located in a shipping container as were the bicycles for people to use. They had a library, merch, bathrooms, and showers in refurbished Airstreams. Cool concept.

We enjoyed tooling around Ventura again. We visited our pals at Paddy’s, the wonderful dive bar we discovered on our previous stay. It so happened that a music festival was going on at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. It was the Skulls and Roses festival. To help you avoid guessing what that is, I’ll tell you that it was everything Grateful Dead. Lots of tie-dye, long skirts, and jamming. The fairgrounds are right along the beach, so when we took our walks along the strand, we could enjoy a bit of the music. Buster and I like the Dead’s music, but we are not Deadheads to the extent that we wanted to pay the high price of admission. I do like the songs like Sugar Magnolia, Truckin’, and Ripple. I also like the little bears and other Dead logos.

I remain amazed to see all of the different types of plants in Southern California. I’ll include a few pics below.

The office offered Claudet Colbert posters, morning coffee, tea, chocolate chip cookies, and little cups of lemon curd with chia seeds (it is California after all)
